The Enugu State Police Command on September 22 arrested 30-year-old Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and concealing her remains inside the toilet of his apartment in Olympic Layout, One-Day area of Enugu South LGA. The suspect was arrested on Monday, September 21, 2026, after neighbours reportedly discovered the decomposing remains of the woman following an offensive odour emanating from his apartment.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe said that the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by police operatives attached to Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30 pm. The deceased was identified only as Chinyere, as police said efforts were ongoing to establish her surname, age, and address and trace her relatives.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on September 19 before wrapping her remains in nylon and locking them inside the toilet. “The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the Police,” the statement said.
The police said the remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy and that the suspect confessed during preliminary interrogation that the incident occurred following an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).The command said the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing were still being investigated.
