A social media content creator Ezema Kelechi, known as “Kelwizzy,” who had drawn attention in recent weeks for posting videos documenting the deplorable state of roads across Nsukka in Enugu state, was abducted from his home on 5 August , assaulted, and handed over to police, according to accounts from his family and residents circulating widely on social media.
According to his brother, men identifying themselves as neighbourhood watch operatives contacted Kelwizzy claiming they wanted to film a birthday shout-out for him in exchange for payment — a promotion he does on his social media page. He reportedly agreed and shared his house location. When the men arrived, they allegedly ordered him outside, beat him, and forced him into a vehicle.
Residents say he was taken from his house to a location near Amagbo Primary School close to Alor-Uno, where he was further beaten with a cable wire, before being dropped off at a police station. He was reportedly held at the Nsukka police area command and has since been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Enugu, according to family and community accounts. When NOHR contact the Police Area command in Nsukka, the officer incharge confirmed that Kellwizzy was being detained on the orders of the Chairman of Nsukka local government , Engr Jude Asogwa who accused him of Cyber bullying.
The incident has triggered outrage among residents and online commentators, many of whom are questioning why a neighbourhood watch group would be used to seize, assault, and detain someone over criticism of government service delivery. “When did speaking about the problems in our community become a crime?” one widely shared post asked, echoing sentiment from dozens of Nsukka residents who argue that exposing poor road conditions, particularly during the rainy season , should not invite violence or arrest.
Nsukka residents have also linked the attack to an earlier episode in which another popular social media influencer Chijinkem Ugwuanyi narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on 13 December 2025 at a filling station in the area, allegedly by persons connected to the local government chairman. Some residents allege the same network of enforcers is behind both incidents, though this claim has not been independently verified. Local officials, including the area’s council chairman, have not issued a public response to the allegations at the time of this report.
Civil society voices and residents are calling for Kelwizzy’s immediate and unconditional release, arguing that criticism of public infrastructure failures is a legitimate exercise of free expression, not a criminal act. “If those in authority are not ready to fix these roads, then they should prepare to face more scrutiny, because the call for accountability will not stop,” one commentator wrote.
