Suspected herdsmen have reportedly killed a commercial cyclist (Okada rider) in a fresh attack on the Ugbene Ajima community in the Uzo Uwani Local government Council area of Enugu State. The attack took place last Tuesday, December 8, in Ifuogwu Ogboo Isiuvuru area where the victim had gone to harvest cassava.
The victim, Anigbogu Chidi had gone to the farm in the company of another person, one Ngozika when he was accosted by herdsmen who queried him about their missing cattle.
Sources within the community told NOHR that Chidi and Ngozika were harvesting cassava when the Fulani herdsmen with cutlasses met them and start querying them.” Chidi was trying to explain that he was just a job man when they started threatening him with their cutlass. As he was trying to escape, he unfortunately slipped and fell down and they started cutting him to pieces”
The Enugu State Police Command could not be reached to confirm the incident
Several communities in Uzo Uwani Local government in Enugu state have been under repeated attacks from herdsmen in the last 7 years. In April 2016 herdsmen invade Nimbo Community in the area council killing or maiming at least 20 people and destroying properties worth millions of Naira. The Enugu state government, shortly after the incident vowed to stop further killings by the herdsmen in the state.
However, the effort appears too little too late as the killing and destruction of farmlands by the marauding herders continued
