Dr. Ahmad Isa, founder of Human Rights Radio and Television and widely known as the “Ordinary President” of the Brekete Family, has filed a criminal defamation suit against a Kaduna resident, Maryam Adam, following a viral video in which she leveled abusive remarks against him.
Court documents show the suit was filed at the Chief Magistrate Court of Kaduna State, Kabala Doki, and registered as Case No. KMD/97CU/26.
The case arose in the aftermath of the killing of Malama Ummulkhairi, a woman who was lynched and burned to death in Maraban Jos, Kaduna, following allegations that she had stolen a child. In the wake of the killing, Maryam Adam is alleged to have posted a video that circulated widely on social media, in which she directed insults at Dr. Isa, referring to him using derogatory terms including “dabba” (animal) and “mahaukaci” (madman), among other remarks the complainants say were meant to ridicule and demean him.
According to the application filed by counsel Fatima Umar Bala, Esq. of Darayn Attorneys, the complainants — Human Rights Radio & Television Brekete Family and Dr. Ahmad Isa — are seeking criminal summons against Maryam Adam on four counts:
- Defamation under Section 371, punishable under Section 372 of the Penal Code
- Injurious falsehood under Section 373, punishable under Section 376
- Criminal intimidation under Section 377
- Use of insulting or abusive language under Section 379
The filing states that the defendant is accused of having deliberately used language against Dr. Isa that was intended to insult and belittle him, including the specific terms cited above. The court has granted the application. Maryam Adam has been issued a summons to appear in person before CMC 10, Kabala Doki, Kaduna, on August 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to answer the charges.
