NOHR is a media project of the Social Justice Advocacy Initiative( SJAI), a registered non-governmental organization under the Companies and Allied Matters Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
SJAI is an independent NGO that promotes protection of human rights and social justice in Nigeria through research and advocacy.
Specifically, SJAI monitors, investigates, and exposes human rights abuses occurring under the guise of law enforcement. SJAI is also committed to increasing the transparency and accountability of governments and law enforcement agencies through publications and media advocacy.
AT NOHR, we believe that the media landscape in Nigeria is too close and dependent on government, political and business patronage. The industry therefore lacks the capacity to consistently defend the human rights of ordinary Nigerians.
We also believe that the media is far removed from the day to day struggle of millions of ordinary people who go through excruciating human rights abuses from both state and non-state actors. Often human rights abusers are not held accountable due to the lack of in-depth coverage by the media. NOHR emerged as a response to the clarion call for a paradigm shift in media reportage which focuses more on human rights issues in Nigeria
