  • Lecturers Paid  18 days’ Salary

There are indications that the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) may resume its strike action following the federal government’s inability to pay their outstanding salaries.

ASUU had suspended their eight-month-old strike on October 14 following a  court order directing the union to return to the classroom.

Several sources within the academic community told NOHR that the academic lecturers were only paid 18 days’ salary, contrary to the agreement ASUU reached with the federal government before their resumption.  Many of the local branches of ASUU have already fixed a  congress meeting to address the issue.  According to one of our sources, the University of Nigeria branch will be meeting on Tuesday  8 November to take the next decision.

Many  ASUU members NOHR spoke to yesterday said they will likely resume the strike in the coming days if nothing is done to address the situation.  ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the latest development. “Yes, we were paid half salary for October and that is not what we expected. However, as an organised union, we are meeting soon to deliberate on the issue and take appropriate actions” he said in a Facebook post.
