Despite heavy police presence, activists on Thursday gathered in their hundreds to stage a walk marking the second anniversary of the #Endsars protest. The walk was to mark the second memorial of the Lekki shooting that took place at the tollgate and to honour those that lost their lives to police and military brutality.
The Lekki tollgate was the epicentre of the #Endsars protests. Youths who gathered day and night at the tollgate were dispersed from the location by gun-wielding soldiers on October 20, 2020, an action which led to loss of lives.
In Lagos, the protesters carried coffins, flags, and banners to mark the memorial. Some protesters were also seen waving Nigerian flags from inside their vehicles and honking their horns while singing solidarity songs
Many Nigerians including the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, Nigerian artistes Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, Adebowale ‘ Mr. Macaroni’ Adedayo, and many others joined the solidarity walk despite the intimidating police presence
NOHR learned that the police arrested four persons at the Lekki Tollgate while firing teargas into the air in a bid to disperse the peaceful protesters. Those arrested were identified as Olamide Raheemi, Samuel Ishola, Ifeanyi, and one unidentified person.
