Hisbah, a local vigilance group, has arrested 31 persons in Jigawa state for what it has described as “immoral acts”.
Ibrahim Dahiru, the Hisbah commander in the state, told NAN on Wednesday that the suspects were arrested at about 6 am for allegedly engaging in prostitution and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
He said the suspects include 25 women in the Kazaure LGA of the state. Dahiru said the persons were arrested during a raid by Hisbah tagged “Reap what you sow’’.
The commander said 55 bottles of assorted alcoholic beverages and 50 litres of locally-brewed alcohol named “Burukutu” were seized during the raid. He said the suspects and the seized items were handed over to the police in the area for further action. Dahiru commended residents of the state for their support and cooperation with the group. He assured the public that Hisbah would continue to fight against “immoral acts” in all parts of the state.
Hisbah is a religious corps responsible for the implementation of Shariah law in some northern states. In July 2021, it banned mannequin use by fashion entrepreneurs, boutique owners, and in commercials. The Kano Hisbah had argued the practice was “immoral” and violated Islamic provisions and teachings.
Last February, Hisbah said it arrested 47 young men and 31 under-aged girls for allegedly engaging in “illicit acts”.It said the youths were caught in “compromising positions using drugs” at a party in Nasarawa GRA axis of Kano.
